The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) is seeking public input on future land transportation needs as it updates its Statewide Long-Range Land Transportation Plan. The plan, which will guide improvements to the state’s transportation systems through 2045, addresses the needs of freight, motorists, transit users, bicyclists and pedestrians.

According to HDOT, the plan considers issues such as congestion, safety, sea-level rise, erosion and changing travel patterns. Community members are encouraged to participate in identifying priorities and solutions for Hawaii’s transportation infrastructure.

A previous round of public meetings in March 2025 introduced the plan’s goals and objectives and reviewed existing and forecast conditions. Surveys were collected at that time to gather feedback on needs and opportunities. In March 2026, HDOT will present survey results along with outcomes from scenario planning tasks, financial forecasts and funding strategies.

Virtual public meetings will be held where a presentation will start each session. Those unable to attend can visit the project website for more information or to view meeting recordings.

Anyone requiring language interpretation or special services should contact the HDOT Public Affairs Office before the meeting date so requests can be accommodated.

HDOT manages facilities including airports for domestic and international carriers, commercial harbors and a statewide highway system across all six major Hawaiian islands (official website). The department operates as part of the executive branch of Hawaii’s government (official website) and oversees 11 commercial service airports, four general aviation airports, nine commercial harbors and over 2,400 lane miles of highways (official website). Its mission is to deliver a safe, efficient, accessible and sustainable transportation system that supports mobility for people and goods while fostering economic growth (official website). HDOT collaborates with federal agencies such as the Federal Aviation Administration and U.S. Coast Guard as well as county departments (official website).

For more details or special accommodations regarding participation in upcoming meetings, individuals may contact the HDOT Public Affairs Office by phone at 808-587-2160 or by email at [email protected].
