Hawaii DOT reduces speed limit on Kunia Road due to increased agricultural activity

The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (HDOT) has announced a change in the speed limit on Kunia Road, effective July 18. The speed limit will be reduced from 45 mph to 35 mph in both directions. In the northbound direction, this change applies between ʻAnonui Street and Kunia Plant Road. For southbound traffic, the new limit will be enforced between the Hawai‘i Country Club Golf Course entrance and ʻAnonui Street.

This adjustment is attributed to increased agricultural activity in the area and a need for better roadway access. Currently, Kunia Road experiences an Annual Average Daily Traffic (AADT) of 13,000 vehicles, with large trucks making up 5.5% of this volume.

The reduction aims to enhance safety by giving road users more time to react to vehicles entering from connecting roads and reducing risky turns from side roads.
