The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (HDOT) has announced its plans to declare a traffic emergency zone on Farrington Highway (Route 93) near the Keaʻau Stream Bridge in Mākaha. This action is in line with the Hawaii Revised Statutes § 264-1.5, as a 200-foot-long section of shoulder and guardrail north of the bridge has experienced erosion.
HDOT is moving swiftly to prevent further erosion under the active lanes and maintain the safety of Farrington Highway commuters. By declaring a traffic emergency zone, HDOT aims to expedite the procurement and permitting processes required to make necessary improvements to the state highway.
The public is invited to comment on this designation during a virtual meeting scheduled within 24 hours of the announcement. The meeting is set for Sunday, March 30 at 2 p.m. via Microsoft Teams. Participants can join the session online or call in using the provided conference pin.
