The Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT) has announced the cancellation of additional daytime work on Farrington Highway, stretching from Nānākuli to Ko Olina. The planned safety improvements have been put on hold due to inefficiencies observed by the contractor.

The current setup and removal process allows for only about three hours of active work daily, which has been deemed insufficient for project completion. Consequently, the closure of a single lane in each direction on Farrington Highway from Pōhakunui Avenue to Aliʻinui Drive, scheduled from 7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, has been canceled temporarily.

HDOT plans to resume work in January 2026 when night work options become available outside of turtle nesting season (May to September) and seabird fallout season (September to December). Announcements regarding this will be made as scheduling is confirmed.

Nightly closures will continue between Laʻaloa Street and the Kalaeloa Interchange from 7 p.m. to 6:15 a.m., Monday through Thursday evenings. Further details on safety countermeasures can be accessed at https://highways.dot.gov/safety/proven-safety-countermeasures.

Originally anticipated over a 33-week period with an estimated completion date of December 2025, the project’s completion is now revised to March 2026 due to this pause. All schedules are weather-dependent and subject to change.

HDOT expressed gratitude for public cooperation during these efforts to maintain safe facilities.
