The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (HDOT) warns travelers about expected high traffic at state airports during the Easter weekend and the 62nd annual Merrie Monarch Festival. This event, which takes place in Hilo and begins on Easter Sunday, April 20, runs until Saturday, April 26. It is anticipated to attract large crowds to Hawai‘i Island, leading to increased congestion and limited parking at the state’s major airports.

At Hilo International Airport, HDOT collaborates with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to manage the expected increase in travelers due to the Merrie Monarch festivities. Measures include having technicians ready to address technical issues with screening equipment, additional staff for passenger screenings, and deploying canine units for baggage screening if necessary.

HDOT advises air travelers during this busy period to plan accordingly, whether they are traveling to Hilo or other destinations.
