The Hawaii Department of Agriculture and Biosecurity (DAB) will hold its second annual statewide Pesticide Disposal Program (PDP) for commercial pesticide users on Lāna‘i in March 2026. The program allows commercial operations and government agencies to safely dispose of canceled, suspended, unwanted, or unlabeled pesticides at no cost. Households are not eligible to participate.

The collection event is scheduled for Tuesday, March 24, 2026, from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Registration is required by Tuesday, March 3, 2026, at 4:30 p.m., and drop-off locations will be provided only to registered participants.

Participants can dispose of up to 250 pounds of eligible pesticides. They must inventory the type and quantity of each pesticide they plan to bring. More information about registration, accepted materials, frequently asked questions, safety tips for transporting pesticides, and the event schedule is available on the DAB PDP webpage: https://dab.hawaii.gov/pi/main/pesticide-disposal-program/.

Eligible participants include agricultural operations such as farms, ranches, nurseries, greenhouse growers; pesticide dealers; licensed pest control operators; golf course operators; landscape professionals; state and city agencies; and other commercial end users of pesticides. Residential users are excluded from this program and should contact their counties regarding household hazardous waste disposal.

“While pesticides play a significant role in our daily lives, responsible pesticide management is crucial and improper disposal can lead to potential risks for human and animal health and our environment,” said Sharon Hurd, chairperson of the Hawai‘i Board of Agriculture and Biosecurity. “With the PDP, our Pesticides Branch has developed an environmentally friendly solution for commercial entities to dispose of unwanted pesticides at no cost.”

The Hawaii Department of Agriculture provides services such as pest control and technical assistance while regulating pesticides across the state through programs aimed at preserving agriculture and natural resources. The department supports farmers with loans and grants as part of its mission to foster sustainability in Hawaii’s agricultural sector (https://hdoa.hawaii.gov).

For questions or registration assistance regarding the PDP event on Lāna‘i, participants may contact EnviroServices & Training Center at 808-456-3494 or email [email protected].
