The Hawaii Department of Transportation announced on Apr. 24 that two speed humps will be installed on Māmalahoa Highway and one speed table on Kuakini Highway in Honalo, with work scheduled for Thursday, April 30 and Friday, April 1 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The project will require a single-lane closure with alternating traffic routed through the open lane.
These new installations are intended to improve safety by providing physical reminders for motorists about their vehicle speed. According to the department, the design allows vehicles to traverse these features safely at posted speed limits. Over the past five years, there have been eight crashes in this area resulting in one fatality and nine injuries.
Once completed, there will be a total of 24 raised crosswalks, speed tables, and speed humps on state routes across Hawai‘i Island. The department said that work is weather permitting and advised residents to check weekly lane closure information for Hawaiʻi Island at its website.
According to the official website, the Hawaii Department of Transportation manages facilities including multiple airports for domestic and international carriers, commercial harbors, and a statewide highway system.
