The Hawaii Department of Transportation announced on April 6 that materials from recent public meetings about the Līhuʻe Airport Optimization Plan are now available online for community review.
The Līhuʻe Airport Optimization Plan aims to improve safety, operational efficiency, environmental sustainability, and passenger experience at Kauaʻi’s only commercial service airport. The plan is intended to address the needs of residents, visitors, cargo operations, and emergency services while reflecting community values and concerns.
In March, HDOT held a series of in-person and virtual meetings to present an overview of the plan’s purpose and goals. For those unable to attend or who wish to revisit the information, presentation recordings, meeting materials, and a comment form can be accessed on the LAOP project website at http://www.lihoptimizationplan.com. The department said that public comments will be accepted through Friday, April 17.
According to the official website, the Hawaii Department of Transportation manages facilities including multiple airports for domestic and international carriers as well as commercial harbors and a statewide highway system. The department operates as part of the executive branch of Hawaii’s state government according to its official site. In total, HDOT operates 11 commercial service airports across six major Hawaiian islands according to its official website.
The department also states it works with federal agencies such as the Federal Aviation Administration and U.S. Coast Guard in addition to county planning departments according to its official website. Its stated mission is “to deliver a safe, efficient, accessible and sustainable transportation system that supports mobility for people and goods while fostering economic growth and quality of life” according to its official site.
HDOT encourages continued participation from residents as input collected during this phase will help shape future development at Līhuʻe Airport.
