The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) has finished emergency rockfall mitigation work on Hāna Highway (Route 360) between mile markers 9.7 and 9.9 near Waikamoi Stream. The project cost $7.7 million.
In April 2024, a traffic emergency zone was declared for this section of the highway. This allowed HDOT to speed up procurement and permitting processes needed to stabilize the slope above the main road used to access East Maui.
To address the risk, crews scaled the hillsides and removed loose debris before installing a ring net rockfall protection barrier. According to HDOT, “the contractor placed 95,400 square feet of the ring netting on the hillside.” This coverage is larger than a professional football field.
Routine inspections are carried out by crews who check the netted area during the work week. The public can report any rocks caught in the netting system by contacting the Maui District Highways office at 808-873-3535.
HDOT expressed its appreciation for community support during construction: “HDOT thanks the public for its patience and understanding throughout the duration of the project.”
