The Hawaii Department of Transportation announced on May 15 that there will be intermittent traffic holds on Hāna Highway (Route 36) at Maliko Gulch to allow for emergency rock removal.
This measure is scheduled to take place from Monday, May 18 through Friday, May 22, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Both lanes near mile marker 10 at Maliko Gulch will be closed at intervals so crews can safely drop rocks and clear the roadway. The department advises drivers to obey all traffic controls and proceed carefully around workers during this period.
The planned closures are intended to address immediate safety concerns by removing loose rocks that could pose a hazard to motorists. The Hawaii Department of Transportation manages a statewide highway system as well as multiple airports and commercial harbors, according to the official website.
The department functions as part of the executive branch of the State of Hawaii government and collaborates with federal agencies such as the Federal Aviation Administration, U.S. Coast Guard, and Federal Highway Administration in addition to county planning departments, according to the official website.
According to the official website, HDOT aims to deliver a safe, efficient, accessible and sustainable transportation system that supports mobility for people and goods while fostering economic growth across all six major Hawaiian islands.
