The Hawaii Department of Transportation announced on April 1 updated closure information for recovery work on Farrington Highway in Waialua, Pali Highway heading toward Kailua, and Kalanianaʻole Highway at Makapu‘u. These closures are to support ongoing repairs following damage from the March Kona low pressure systems and were not included in the department’s previously released weekly lane closure list for March 28 to April 3.

The affected routes include Farrington Highway in Waialua, Pali Highway Kailua-bound past Waokanaka, and Kalanianaʻole Highway at Makapu‘u. The department said these efforts are necessary to restore roads and infrastructure impacted by recent storms.

The Hawaii Department of Transportation manages facilities such as multiple airports for domestic and international carriers, commercial harbors, and a statewide highway system according to the official website. The agency operates as part of the executive branch of the State of Hawaii government according to the official website.

In addition to highways, the department oversees 11 commercial service airports, four general aviation airports, nine commercial harbors, and maintains approximately 2,450 lane miles across six major Hawaiian islands according to the official website. Its services extend throughout all six major islands according to the official website.

The department works with federal agencies such as the Federal Aviation Administration, U.S. Coast Guard, Federal Highway Administration as well as county planning and public works departments according to the official website. It aims “to deliver a safe, efficient, accessible and sustainable transportation system that supports mobility for people and goods while fostering economic growth and quality of life” according to the official website.

HDOT thanked members of the public for their patience during this period as crews continue repairs. Further updates may be provided as recovery work progresses.
