The Hawaii Department of Transportation announced on April 23 that runners will be present on a section of Honoapiʻilani Highway (Route 30) during the Maui Marathon, scheduled for Sunday, April 26.

The department said the marathon will begin at 5 a.m., starting and ending at the Outrigger Kāʻanapali Beach Resort on Kāʻanapali Parkway. The right southbound lane between Kāʻanapali Parkway and ʻAholo Road will be closed for part of the race, but one southbound lane will remain open. Additionally, the makai right shoulder from ʻAholo Road to Papalāua Wayside Park will be closed to accommodate runners throughout the event. Traffic in both directions will continue with adjusted lanes along the course.

Police officers are expected to be stationed at major intersections for safety. In addition to the full marathon, there will also be a half marathon, a 10k race, and a 5k event—all beginning and ending at the same location with staggered start times and similar routes but different turn-around points. All road closures are planned to end by 9 a.m. or sooner.

According to the official website, the Hawaii Department of Transportation manages facilities including airports serving domestic and international carriers, commercial harbors, and highways across all six major Hawaiian islands. The department operates as part of Hawaii’s executive branch government according to its official website. It oversees eleven commercial service airports, four general aviation airports, nine commercial harbors, and maintains approximately 2,450 lane miles of highways according to its official website.

The department states it aims “to deliver a safe, efficient, accessible and sustainable transportation system that supports mobility for people and goods while fostering economic growth and quality of life” according to its official website. Collaboration with federal agencies such as the Federal Aviation Administration and U.S. Coast Guard is also noted by HDOT according to its official website.
