The Hawaii Department of Transportation announced on May 12 that night work will resume Tuesday, May 26, on the westbound H-201 Moanalua Freeway as part of its ongoing repaving project.
The department said the work had been paused in March due to severe weather events, supply challenges, and crew availability. The upcoming construction will involve nightly closures of three left lanes between Moanalua Gardens and the Hālawa Interchange from 9 p.m. to 4:30 a.m., Sunday through Friday.
During the week beginning May 26, crews are scheduled to start repaving the left three lanes before moving to the right lanes toward the H-3 Freeway overpass. Previous work included completion of repaving along off-ramps at Hālawa Interchange and right lanes between Middle Street off-ramp and Hālawa Interchange as of Dec. 11 last year.
Special duty police officers will be present for traffic control and safety procedures during lane closures. Electronic message boards will inform motorists about planned closures. Remaining tasks include striping on westbound sections between Moanalua Gardens and the H-3 overpass, as well as paving and restriping eastbound areas between the H-3 overpass and Red Hill. The department said all additional work will be announced when scheduled.
The estimated completion date for this project is now January 2027, updated from a previous estimate of July 2026. All schedules are subject to change depending on weather conditions.
“HDOT thanks the public for its cooperation as we work to maintain safe facilities,” according to the department’s statement.
According to the official website, the Hawaii Department of Transportation manages facilities including multiple airports for domestic and international carriers, commercial harbors, and a statewide highway system across all six major Hawaiian islands.
