The Hawaii Department of Transportation announced on April 17 a single-lane closure on the Kapaʻa Bypass Road from Kῡhiō Highway (Wailua) to Olohena Road (Kapaʻa) scheduled for the night of Sunday, April 19. The closure will take place from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. and is necessary to remove temporary road striping.

This work is expected to be completed in one evening, but recent weather conditions have prompted contingency days through Friday, April 24. The department said it will provide updates regarding completion and any additional closures needed during the week.

Reconstruction of the two-way bypass road finished earlier this month, with further tasks including applying weather sealant and permanent thermoplastic striping still pending. Sealant application is set to begin Monday, April 27, with lane closures planned Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., as daytime conditions are required for proper curing. The entire project is scheduled for completion by the end of May.

According to the official website, the Hawaii Department of Transportation manages facilities such as airports serving domestic and international carriers, commercial harbors, and a statewide highway system. The department operates within the executive branch of state government according to its official website. It oversees infrastructure that includes eleven commercial service airports, four general aviation airports, nine commercial harbors, and approximately 2,450 lane miles of highways across six major Hawaiian islands according to its official website.

The agency aims “to deliver a safe, efficient, accessible and sustainable transportation system that supports mobility for people and goods while fostering economic growth and quality of life” according to its official website. Its services extend throughout all six major Hawaiian islands according to its official website. Collaboration with federal agencies such as the Federal Aviation Administration, U.S. Coast Guard and Federal Highway Administration—as well as county planning departments—is also part of its operations according to its official website.
