The Hawaii Department of Transportation announced on May 20 that there will be scheduled lane closures on Kailua Road at Uluʻoa Street and at the mid-block crosswalk east of Ulumanu Drive to remove raised crosswalks.
These closures are planned between 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m., with a single lane affected at each site. The work includes removing the raised crosswalks, restoring pavement, and applying temporary striping. The department said that if work is completed ahead of schedule, crews may move to the next location sooner.
The raised crosswalks were originally installed in September 2022 to improve pedestrian visibility and remind drivers to reduce speed near crossings. With new traffic signals now operating at Uluʻoa Street and Ulumanu Drive, the department said pedestrians will remain protected as vehicles are required to stop when signals are red.
The unprotected mid-block crosswalk east of Ulumanu Drive will be closed permanently. Additional plans include removing ramps and directing pedestrians toward the protected crossing at Ulumanu Drive by installing fencing in the median. Completion for this work, including permanent striping, is expected by mid-June.
The Hawaii Department of Transportation manages facilities such as airports for domestic and international carriers, commercial harbors, and a statewide highway system across all six major Hawaiian islands according to the official website. The agency also works with federal partners like the Federal Aviation Administration and local county departments.
