The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (HDOT) has announced upcoming changes to speed limits on Kekūanāoʻa Street, also known as Airport Road, at Hilo International Airport. The adjustments are intended to improve safety and maintain efficient traffic flow in the area.

According to HDOT, the speed limit will vary between 15 mph and 35 mph along different sections of Airport Road. As drivers approach the airport terminal, the speed limit will increase from 25 mph to 35 mph after the first crossing with Kekūanāoʻa Place, then return to 25 mph after the second crossing with Kekūanāoʻa Place. When exiting the terminal area, the speed limit will change from 15 mph to 25 mph. Within the main airport terminal area itself, the speed limit will remain at 15 mph for traveler and employee safety.

Installation of new speed limit signs is scheduled to begin this week. The revised limits will take effect once signage is in place.

HDOT stated: “HDOT reminds all airport users, employees and visitors to drive with Aloha and obey all traffic laws and speed limits.”
