The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (HDOT) has introduced two new free wayfinding apps for travelers using Daniel K. Inouye International Airport and Lῑhuʻe Airport. The HNL Airport app and LIH Airport app aim to help passengers navigate the terminals more easily and provide access to flight information and airport services.

The apps feature blue dot wayfinding technology, similar to what is found in popular navigation applications like Google Maps or Apple Maps. This technology estimates a user’s physical location on an airport map, assisting them in finding key locations such as check-in counters, baggage claim areas, security checkpoints, departure gates, food and beverage outlets, retail shops, lounges, restrooms, and ground transportation options.

A new feature for Daniel K. Inouye International Airport includes an online parking count tool. According to HDOT, “The estimated available parking counts can be found on the HNL homepage and accessed via the HNL app’s Airport Information link.” These counts are updated every 10 minutes for each parking structure. Since 2022, LED signs have displayed available parking spaces at the entrances of the airport’s three parking structures; now this data is also accessible through the app before travelers arrive at the airport.

Future updates to the apps will add features such as the location of the Skyline Lelepaua station when it opens later this year. There are also plans to develop a similar app for Kahului Airport.

Both apps are available for download from Google Play and Apple Store.
