The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) has extended the public comment period for the state’s first Transportation Energy Security and Waste Reduction Plan to August 31, 2025. The original deadline was July 31, but HDOT officials decided to give residents an extra month to review the draft plan and submit feedback.

The plan outlines strategies for reducing emissions in Hawaii’s transportation sector. State law requires a 50% reduction in transportation emissions from 2005 levels by 2030, with a goal of reaching net negative emissions by 2045—meaning Hawaii would capture more emissions than it produces—and ultimately achieving zero transportation emissions.

Community members can view the draft plan and submit comments through an online form at https://highways.hidot.hawaii.gov/stories/s/h9gp-xxmt. HDOT will also provide information about upcoming public meetings on the same website.

“HDOT appreciates the stakeholders that have participated in the July meetings and provided feedback and welcomes additional feedback on our air, water, and land transportation systems,” according to the department.
