The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (HDOT) has informed highway users about potential traffic delays due to the transport of modular homes for wildfire survivors. The homes are being moved from Kahului to the Ka Laʻi Ola housing site in Lahaina.
The transportation will occur nightly at 9 p.m., from Wednesday, March 12 through Friday, March 14. Trucks will form a caravan and travel from the staging area near the Kahului small boat ramp along Kahului Beach Road (Route 3400) to Lahaina.
The route begins at the Kahului small boat ramp with trucks heading south on Kahului Beach Road, turning left east onto Kaʻahumanu Avenue (Route 32), then right onto Hāna Highway (Route 36). They will turn right onto Elmer F. Carvalho Way (Route 3800), proceed west, and connect with Kūihelani Highway (Route 380). At the intersection with Honoapiʻilani Highway (Route 30), they will turn left and head west to Lahaina. In Lahaina, trucks continue on Honoapiʻilani Highway, making a right turn onto Leialiʻi Parkway near the Lahaina Civic Center and proceed to the site located mauka of the highway.
On Monday, March 10 and Wednesday, March 12, modular homes will be transported from Kahului Harbor to a temporary staging site near the Kahului small boat ramp between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. Trucks will use Kaʻahumanu Avenue from the harbor heading west before turning right onto Kahului Beach Road adjacent to the small boat ramp.
