Hawaiʻi DOT reduces speed limit on Mamalahoa Highway for safety

The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) has announced a reduction in the speed limit on a section of Mamalahoa Highway, Route 11. The change will affect the stretch between Honaunau Elementary School Driveway and Captain Cook Village Road, covering mile posts 106.5 to 109.0.

Starting June 9, 2025, when new signage is installed, the speed limit will be lowered from 45 mph to 35 mph. This adjustment aligns with existing limits before mile post 106.5 and after mile post 109.5, where speeds are set at 35 mph and 30 mph respectively.

According to HDOT, this change aims to provide “a manageable, safe, consistent and enforceable speed” along this segment of the highway which features homes, schools, and businesses. There have been incidents including near misses and accidents resulting in at least one fatality over the past five years.

HDOT emphasizes its commitment to improving road safety by managing speeds through regular reviews of posted limits and ensuring they match surrounding land use. Additional measures such as infrastructure adjustments, roundabouts, and raised pedestrian crosswalks are also part of their strategy to reduce serious traffic injuries and fatalities while maintaining an efficient transportation system.
