The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) has announced the cancellation of the planned continuous weekend closure on the eastbound H-1 Freeway. The closure, which was scheduled between the Kaimakani Street Overpass and the eastbound Nimitz Highway off-ramp (Exit 15) for March 14, will not proceed due to predicted weather conditions.
The contractor involved in the Salt Lake Rehabilitation project decided to cancel this weekend’s planned closure of three right lanes on the H-1 Freeway/Airport Viaduct. Work is expected to resume from Friday, March 21, at 6:30 p.m., continuing through Monday, March 24, at 4 a.m.
During this period, three far-right lanes of the eastbound H-1 Freeway and the lane leading to the Nimitz Highway off-ramp will be closed for repaving activities. The right shoulder will also be inaccessible. Motorists are advised to consider using Moanalua Freeway and other alternate routes during these hours.
The work schedule is set for several weekends as crews continue with tasks such as roadway reconstruction and repaving, guardrail installation, striping, and signage installations as part of the H-1 Freeway Salt Lake Rehabilitation Project. The project is expected to conclude by May 2025, depending on weather conditions.
Drivers are urged to exercise caution and adhere to traffic control signs. Message boards have been installed for advance notice regarding closures. Special duty police officers will be present to assist with safety measures. Emergency services have been informed about the closure plans.
