The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (HDOT) has announced modifications to the intersections of Kailua Road with Uluʻoa Street and Ulumanu Drive. The changes are part of HDOT’s traffic signal project, which will involve the permanent removal of right-turn slip lanes from the side streets onto Kailua Road.

The decision to remove these slip lanes aims to facilitate the construction of new traffic signal poles while minimizing impact on existing utilities. Additionally, curb extensions are being constructed to accommodate the new traffic signals. These extensions, also known as bulb-outs, are expected to enhance safety by reducing pedestrian crossing distances.

To ensure safety during construction, concrete barriers will be set up for highway users. The traffic signal installations are projected to be completed by November 2025.

Variable message boards will inform the public about these modifications. For updates on weekly lane closures on O‘ahu, visit HDOT’s website at https://hidot.hawaii.gov/highways/roadwork/oahu/
