The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) has provided an update on several ongoing improvement projects affecting the H-1 Freeway and H-201 Moanalua Freeway across Oʻahu. These projects involve a series of scheduled lane closures and revised completion dates.
On the H-1 Pearl City and Waimalu Viaduct, crews are performing deck demolition and concrete work between the Hālawa Interchange and the H-1/H-2 split. Work is being conducted on weeknights from Tuesday through Thursday, 7 p.m. to 4:30 a.m., as well as during overnight hours on weekends. The project is expected to be completed by March 2027.
For the H-1 Salt Lake Rehabilitation, paving and guardrail work in the eastbound direction is nearing completion between the Pearl Harbor Interchange and Salt Lake Boulevard underpass, with continuous closures from Friday night to early Monday morning. Final striping in the westbound direction will begin in September 2025, with a typical work schedule of Monday through Thursday nights. The estimated completion date for this project has been pushed back to October 2025 from its previous target of June 2025.
Work continues on concrete deck and roadway improvements along the westbound H-1 Freeway Airport Viaduct, particularly near Valkenburg Street to Middle Street merge. Lane closures occur Monday through Thursday nights, with three-lane weekend closures starting Friday evenings through early Monday mornings. There will also be full overnight closures on Fridays and Saturdays for certain periods. The revised completion date for this project is now December 2025 instead of August 2025.
Eastbound improvements on the H-1 Freeway from Ola Lane Overpass to Likelike Highway Off-Ramp include widening efforts and new retaining walls. Two lanes are closed nightly Monday through Friday as needed, along with closure of the H-201 Moanalua Freeway on-ramp during those times. Additional daily work involves single lane closures on Richard Lane and Gulick Avenue for utility relocation, while Beckley Street remains fully closed during weekday hours for waterline work but is accessible locally outside those hours.
HDOT expects widening and retaining wall construction to finish by November 2025. Installation of a temporary pedestrian bridge at Gulick Avenue overpass will require complete overnight freeway closure in both directions beginning March 2026—later than previously anticipated. The overall Eastbound H-1 Improvements Project is now projected for completion in September 2027 rather than March 2027, depending on weather conditions. On the H-201 Moanalua Freeway resurfacing project between the H-3 Freeway and Fort Shafter, night repaving continues westbound from Kaua Street on-ramp toward the Hālawa/H-3 off-ramps Sundays through Fridays overnight. Work will shift to three left lanes in mid-October after this section concludes; HDOT anticipates finishing by January 2026 if weather allows.
HDOT advises motorists to drive cautiously, observe traffic control signs and barriers, and plan their commutes accordingly due to these ongoing worksites. Special duty police officers will assist with safety procedures throughout these projects.
