The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (HDOT) has issued a notice to drivers to remain alert for runners participating in the Hāna Relay on Saturday, September 13. The event will feature about 75 teams and approximately 450 runners traveling along the shoulder of Hāna Highway from Kahului to Hāna.

According to HDOT, there will be no lane closures during the relay. Runners are instructed to run facing traffic for safety reasons. Maui Police will be present on the course to provide support.

The race is scheduled to start at 4:30 a.m. on Mua Street in Kahului. Participants will head east, turn right onto Kuleana Street, and then left onto Haleakalā Highway (Route 36A). The route continues onto Kala Road near Kahului Airport’s cargo access before turning right back onto Haleakalā Highway heading east. At the intersection with Hāna Highway, runners turn left and proceed toward Hana town, finishing at Hana Ball Park via Uakea Road.

HDOT noted that while the race officially ends at 2:30 p.m., some participants may still be on the course after this time. Drivers are advised to remain cautious throughout the day.
