The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) has announced that the makai lane on Hawaiʻi Belt Road (Route 19) at the Hakalau Stream Bridge will be closed around the clock from Wednesday, December 3 to Sunday, December 7. This closure is required for curing new concrete grout as part of ongoing bridge repairs.

Hawai‘i Belt Road, typically a two-lane route in this section, will be reduced to a single lane during this period. Traffic in both directions will continue through alternating traffic control measures. According to HDOT, “Honoka‘a-bound traffic will be contraflowed in the Hilo-bound lane,” with flaggers or temporary signals managing the flow depending on work and traffic conditions.

HDOT stated, “This multiple-day closure is necessary to repair the foundation of the bridge and is part of the repairs needed in preparation for the full Hakalau Bridge Rehabilitation Project.” The department also noted that “the full project is expected to commence in Fall 2027 and is anticipated to take two years to complete.”
