The Hawai‘i Department of Agriculture’s Market News and Analysis Branch has released four statistical reports this week. These reports provide data on various aspects of agriculture in the state, including egg prices, farm labor statistics, farm production expenses by industry type, and land with irrigation systems.
In Honolulu, the average retail price for a dozen large locally produced eggs decreased by 5.6% to $9.04 in May from $9.58 in April. The price of mainland eggs also fell significantly by 16.5%, dropping from $9.32 in April to $7.78 in May.
Farm labor statistics for the first half of 2025 show that the total number of hired farm workers in Hawai‘i has remained stable at 5,000 since October 2022. The average hourly wage ranged between $18.74 and $20.08 this year, compared to last year’s range of $17.25 to $18.74. Notably, there was a 32% increase in farm workers with H-2A visas during the first half of the U.S fiscal year 2025, rising from 225 workers last year to 296 this year.
The report on farm production expenses by industry for 2022 highlights that Hawai‘i’s fruit and tree nut industry incurred total expenses of $154.2 million across its 2,688 farms, averaging about $57,400 per farm. In contrast, the oilseed and grain industry reported total expenses of $101.9 million across just 12 farms, averaging approximately $8.5 million per farm.
