The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (HDOT) has announced that the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation (HART) will close access to Bethel Street and Nu‘uanu Avenue at their intersections with Nimitz Highway on Friday, December 19. The closure will begin at 6 p.m. and last until 5:30 a.m. the following day.

According to HDOT, the overnight closure is necessary for HART contractors to pour concrete shafts that will support the elevated guideway at these intersections. During this period, vehicles will not be able to turn into or out of Bethel Street and Nu‘uanu Avenue from Nimitz Highway.

Despite the closures, two through lanes in each direction on Nimitz Highway will remain open. Drivers are advised to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and exercise caution when traveling through work zones.

“Special duty police officers will be on-site to assist with traffic control and safety procedures,” stated HDOT in its announcement. “Electronic message boards will be posted to notify motorists of closure information.”

Work related to HART continues along Nimitz Highway between Awa and Richards Streets, taking place daily from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., as well as nightly from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m.
