Improvement work on the Hakalau bridge along Hawaiʻi Belt Road (Route 19) near mile post 15.3 is set to begin Thursday, September 25, according to the Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT). The project will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The construction will last approximately four months and may require lane closures. During this period, the speed limit in the area will be reduced from 55 mph to 45 mph at all times. The repairs focus on strengthening the base around the foundation of the bridge.

HDOT stated, “When the concrete grout is poured, the speed limit for crossing the bridge will be reduced to 25 mph to allow for curing. A notice will be issued when this happens. This work is being done in preparation for the full bridge rehabilitation project.”

Variable message boards are being placed along Hawaiʻi Belt Road to inform drivers about upcoming closures and changes. For weekly updates on scheduled lane closures on Hawaiʻi Island, HDOT directs travelers to its website at https://hidot.hawaii.gov/highways/roadwork/hawaii/.
