The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) has announced the extension of the nightly full closure of the westbound Moanalua Freeway from the Middle Street overpass to the Fort Shafter/Kaua Street on-ramp. The extended closure will continue through Friday, May 30, due to paving maintenance work. This decision follows 13 unworkable days caused by adverse weather conditions. Initially, the completion date was set for Friday, March 28.
The maintenance work is scheduled nightly from Sunday through Friday, with work hours from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m., excluding holidays. This schedule is subject to weather permitting conditions. During the closure, westbound motorists will be redirected via the Middle Street off-ramp (Exit 19A) from the westbound H-201 Moanalua Freeway to the Fort Shafter/Kaua Street on-ramp to re-enter the freeway.
Upon completing work on this section, crews will begin repaving the westbound direction on H-201 Moanalua Freeway to the Hālawa Interchange. This additional phase is scheduled to start the week of Monday, June 2, under the current work schedule. Completion of this section is projected for November 2025, again depending on weather conditions.
HDOT assures the presence of special duty police officers on-site for traffic control and safety. Electronic message boards will be utilized to inform motorists about the planned closure. According to HDOT, “All work is weather permitting.”
