H-1 Airport Viaduct project completion delayed until December due to material issues

The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) has announced an extension to the ongoing H-1 Airport Viaduct Improvements project, which affects westbound lanes on the H-1 Freeway. According to HDOT, the delay is due to issues discovered last week during the installation of expansion joint overlays. The rubber joint seals began separating from the roadway, requiring additional materials to be ordered.

These materials are expected to arrive in Hawaiʻi by September, after which crews will return to install them at various expansion joint locations throughout the work area.

Work on the westbound H-1 Airport Viaduct continues with nightly closures. Three right lanes will be closed Tuesdays through Thursdays from 6 p.m. to 4 a.m. for deck and expansion joint work. Continuous weekend closures occur from Fridays through Mondays, 8 p.m. to 4 a.m., with full closures between Keʻehi Interchange and Pearl Harbor Interchange from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m., allowing for installation of expansion joints across the roadway.

During these hours, on-ramps from Lunalilo H-1 Freeway, Nimitz Highway, and Kamehameha Highway onto the Airport Viaduct will be closed, and motorists will be detoured via Nimitz Highway. On-ramps from Aolele Street and Rodgers Boulevard at Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL) will remain open; however, ramp closures may vary weekly. Motorists can check weekly closure updates on HDOT’s Oʻahu Roadwork page at https://hidot.hawaii.gov/highways/roadwork/oahu/.

HDOT advises drivers to proceed cautiously in work areas and obey all posted construction signage.

Due to a total of 99 unworkable days caused by weather conditions and material delays, HDOT now estimates that project completion will move from August 2025 to December 2025.

“Motorists are advised to proceed with caution through work areas and obey all posted construction signage,” HDOT stated.

HDOT also reminds drivers that all scheduled work is weather permitting and final completion dates may change depending on conditions.
