The Hawaii Department of Transportation announced on May 15 that guardrail repairs will require lane closures and shifts along Honoapiʻilani Highway starting Monday, May 18.
The project will affect the area between mile markers 22 and 22.8, near Leialiʻi Parkway and Fleming Road. A single lane in either direction will be closed or shifted from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, from May 18 to May 22. At least one lane of traffic in each direction will remain open during this period as crews alternate work on the makai or mauka side of the highway.
This guardrail repair is part of a federal aid emergency project supporting recovery efforts from the 2023 Maui wildfires. The work is expected to last about three months, moving southbound toward Kapunakea Street with ongoing lane shifts or closures throughout its duration. Weekly updates regarding additional lane closures are planned, according to the department’s official roadwork website. Construction schedule changes can also be found on HDOT’s social media channels.
According to the official website, the Hawaii Department of Transportation manages airports for domestic and international carriers, commercial harbors, and a statewide highway system spanning all six major Hawaiian islands. The department functions as part of the executive branch of state government and collaborates with federal agencies such as the Federal Aviation Administration, U.S. Coast Guard, and Federal Highway Administration along with county planning departments.
The Hawaii Department of Transportation states that it aims to deliver a safe, efficient, accessible and sustainable transportation system supporting mobility for people and goods while fostering economic growth and quality of life across Hawaii.
