The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (HDOT) has announced that full closures of the Kāneʻohe-bound lanes on Likelike Highway will begin Tuesday, September 2. The closures will take place from Valley View Drive through the Wilson Tunnel.

According to HDOT, the closures are scheduled for weeknights from 7 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. and are necessary for the installation of steel hanger rods in the ceiling of Wilson Tunnel. These rods provide support to the tunnel ceiling, and their replacement is expected to reduce the chances of emergency tunnel closures.

During this period, motorists can use Pali Highway and H-3 Freeway as alternative routes across the Ko‘olau range. The project is estimated to be completed by Friday, October 31, depending on weather conditions. The work will not occur on weekends or holidays.

HDOT advises drivers to exercise caution, follow all traffic control signs and barriers, and plan their commutes in advance. Special duty police officers will be present at the site to assist with safety procedures.

“HDOT reminds motorists to drive with caution, be aware of all traffic control signs and barriers, and plan commutes ahead of time. Special duty police officers will be on-site assisting with safety procedures.”
