Acting United States Attorney Kenneth M. Sorenson announced the extradition of a foreign citizen from Oahu to New Zealand, where he faces charges for alleged crimes against a minor. The individual, who overstayed a visitor visa in Hawaii, is accused of rape and other offenses involving a twelve-year-old in 2015. Due to New Zealand’s legal provisions, his identity remains undisclosed by U.S. authorities.
The allegations stem from an incident at the victim’s family home in New Zealand. Witnesses, including a friend of the victim, have provided statements corroborating the claims and reporting inappropriate behavior by the accused before the incident. After initially encountering law enforcement in September 2015, the man left New Zealand and eventually arrived in Hawaii.
In March 2024, he was apprehended by the United States Marshals Service with help from Homeland Security Investigations. Following court proceedings in Honolulu, he was certified as extraditable on April 3, 2025. The Secretary of State approved the extradition request, and he was transferred to New Zealand authorities on May 30, 2025.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan D. Slack from the District of Hawaii and the Office of International Affairs within the Justice Department’s Criminal Division managed this case.
