The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (HDOT) has commenced construction on the Farrington Highway Widening Project. The project spans approximately three miles from Kapolei Golf Course Road near the University of Hawai‘i – West O‘ahu to Old Fort Weaver Road. It aims to expand the current two-lane road by adding a new two-way turn lane, as well as bike lanes and pedestrian sidewalks on both sides from Kapolei to ‘Ewa.
The project includes reconstruction of the Kaloi Stream Bridge and Honouliuli Stream Bridge, construction of drainage structures and culverts, asphalt and concrete pavements, concrete curbs, gutters and sidewalks, installation of gas, water and sewer lines, street lighting, traffic signals, landscaping, relocation of water mains, relocation of electrical and telecommunications infrastructure overhead and underground. It also involves demolition and removal of structures along with clearing, grading, pavement markings and signage.
This widening initiative is designed to address future capacity needs while accommodating multimodal travel for pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists and transit users. The development supports affordable housing projects in the area and enhances connections to four city Skyline stations: Kualakaʻi – East Kapolei; Keoneʻae – UHWO; Honouliuli – Hoʻopili; and Hoʻaeʻae – West Loch stations.
The $138 million contract was awarded to Nan Inc., with completion expected by Spring 2027. The City and County of Honolulu have pledged $15 million towards this endeavor.
