The Hawai’i Department of Transportation (HDOT) has announced expansion joint repairs on the H-3 freeway, specifically in the Kane’ohe-bound right lane. The scheduled maintenance will occur from 7 p.m. on Friday, May 2, to 7 a.m. on Saturday, May 3. The repairs will take place between a half-mile before the Harano Tunnel and the Hospital Rock interchange.

During the repair period, traffic will be shifted to the left shoulder, ensuring that two lanes remain open for vehicles heading toward the Windward side. The necessity of expansion joints arises from their role in bridging the gaps between concrete slabs, which cannot be laid flush due to temperature-driven expansion and contraction. HDOT is set to replace temporary steel plates with the recently arrived expansion joint materials.

“HDOT thanks Windward motorists for their patience as the department procured the expansion joints and contractor services. Please drive with caution around the work zone so that all workers can return home safely,” the department expressed.

Information about this lane closure, which was scheduled immediately upon the arrival of materials, has been incorporated into HDOT’s O’ahu weekly lane closure list available online.

For further information, the media can contact the HDOT Public Affairs Office.
