The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (HDOT) has finished emergency repairs on Kamehameha V Highway (Route 450) on Moloka‘i, reopening the eastbound lane at mile post 18.7 near Waialua Stream as of Tuesday, October 7.

The eastbound lane was initially closed in December to address erosion and prevent further damage to the roadway. According to HDOT, crews began coastal road protections in January by placing aggregate-filled bags along the side of the road to absorb wave energy and filling voids caused by previous waves.

Shoreline protections and foundation repairs were completed in early February. However, paving and striping work needed to move travel lanes inland within the right-of-way was delayed until asphalt became available. The total cost for these repairs reached $720,000.

HDOT stated that crews will continue monitoring the repair site for signs of coastal erosion.
