Daytime single-lane closures will begin on the H-1 Freeway Wai‘alae Viaduct starting Monday, September 29, as announced by the Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT). The closures are scheduled to take place on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. through Friday, October 3.
According to HDOT, one left lane in each direction between 21st Avenue and the Wai‘alae Country Club will be closed while crews perform seismic retrofits along the median. The work includes thickening pile caps and wrapping parts of the center columns with fiber reinforced polymers.
Ramps in the area will remain open during this period. However, there will also be a left lane closure on Wai‘alae Avenue below the viaduct due to potential falling debris.
The project is expected to last three months, with overall completion anticipated for February 2026, depending on weather conditions.
“HDOT thanks the public for its cooperation as we work to maintain safe facilities,” stated the department.
