The County of Maui Department of the Prosecuting Attorney announced on Apr. 14 that it will host a sign waving event, ceremony, and candlelight vigil in observance of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week. The events are scheduled for Wednesday, April 22 at Kalana O Maui, located at 200 S. High St. in Wailuku.
The event aims to raise awareness about the rights and needs of crime victims within the community. National Crime Victims’ Rights Week is observed annually across the country each April with various activities dedicated to supporting survivors and remembering victims.
Sign waving will begin at 4:30 p.m., followed by a ceremony and candlelight vigil from 5 to 6 p.m. Angelina Mercado, executive director of the Hawaiʻi State Coalition Against Domestic Violence, will serve as the featured speaker during the ceremony.
This year’s theme is “LISTEN. ACT. ADVOCATE. Protect victims, serve communities.” County Prosecuting Attorney Andrew Martin said, “The theme emphasizes the importance of shared humanity and need for advocacy, urging us to place it at the heart of our support for survivors and victims of crime.” Martin added, “Please join us as we continue to recognize this vital week of awareness and remembrance and work toward achieving justice for victims of all crime.”
