The County of Maui Department of Public Works announced on May 15 that it has implemented new procedures to allow factory-built housing as permanent dwellings in the Lahaina Burn Zone, provided these structures comply with updated regulations and policies.
This change is intended to increase flexibility and expand housing options for residents affected by recent events in Lahaina. Factory-built housing refers to dwellings or portions of dwellings that are prefabricated or assembled off-site before being placed at their final location.
Jordan Molina, Director of the Department of Public Works, said, “In collaboration with the Office of the Mayor and the Maui County Council, the County Department of Public Works is committed to expanding housing opportunities for the Lahaina community through new dwelling construction. Factory-built housing has the potential to reduce construction costs, increase flexibility and create a more efficient path from permitting to move-in for local families.”
The department provided information on how residents can learn more about factory-built housing requirements.
