The County of Maui Department of Water Supply announced on April 3 that crews have completed a temporary repair to the South Maui mainline break, with water service expected to return to normal within a few hours. Permanent repairs are scheduled from Sunday, April 5 through Monday, April 6.
Officials are asking all South Maui customers—including residents, visitors, hotels, and condominium properties—to conserve water and limit nonessential use from 5 a.m. Sunday until 6 p.m. Monday while crews complete the permanent repairs.
The department said that although temporary repairs were made, the break was larger than anticipated and additional parts are needed for full restoration. Efforts are underway to secure necessary materials and equipment for the work.
“During the initial repair period, water demand remained high, which contributed to low tank levels and temporary service disruptions in some areas,” John Stufflebean, Director of the Department of Water Supply, said. “We are asking for the community’s kōkua during this next phase of repairs. With a longer repair window ahead, conservation will be critical to maintaining water availability for essential needs.”
Water outages or low pressure may occur during the repair period in areas mauka of Līpoa Street—between Līpoa Street and Kilohana Drive—and throughout Wailea and Mākena. While storage tanks are being refilled, officials warn they could deplete rapidly if conservation is not observed.
Affected locations include Maui Research & Technology Park, Kīhei Charter School, as well as businesses and residents throughout Kīhei, Wailea and Mākena. Although Maui Meadows is not expected to be affected directly by outages or low pressure conditions during this time frame, residents there are still asked to conserve water.
Customers should refrain from nonessential uses such as watering lawns or washing vehicles until permanent repairs conclude on Monday evening. Conservation efforts will help maintain sufficient supply for essential needs while work continues.
