The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (HDOT) has provided an update on the ongoing Pa‘akea Road Improvements, aimed at offering an additional access route along a 6-mile stretch between Nānākuli and Māʻiliʻili Beach. Originally expected to open by April 2025, the project is now forecasted for completion by Fall 2025.
The adjustment in the timeline is primarily due to land acquisition challenges. HDOT is in the process of securing private properties along Pa‘akea Road from Māʻiliʻili Road to Hakimo Road. There is also the need to transfer the city-owned portion of the road to the state and acquire an easement from Farrington Highway to Pa‘akea Road via Lualualei Naval Road.
HDOT Director Ed Sniffen emphasized the critical nature of the project, stating, “Having a dependable, round-the-clock alternative to Farrington Highway is important for Wai‘anae Coast residents for emergencies and daily commutes.” The department remains committed to efficient and effective solutions like the Pa‘akea Road Improvements to enhance the reliability of transportation networks.
Adding to the perspective, Representative Darius K. Kila highlighted the traffic burdens faced by the local community. “Every day, our community faces heavy traffic along Farrington Highway and the constant risk of having only one way in and out,” said Kila. He stressed the essential nature of alternate routes for safety and emergency preparedness.
The HDOT has expressed gratitude towards all parties involved in the land acquisition and transfer processes necessary to finalize this needed road access for the community.
