Hawaii voters are reminded by Common Cause Hawaii that “election night is not results night” as they head to the polls today, November 8. Voters have until 7 p.m. to cast their ballots in person or return their mail ballots for the 2022 midterm election.
Heather Ferguson, director of state operations for Common Cause Hawaii, emphasized the importance of counting every vote: “It’s crucial every voice is heard in this election and that means counting every vote. It takes time to count every vote accurately and that’s why election night is not results night. Even if we don’t know the election winners when we go to bed, what matters most is making sure every voter’s ballot is counted accurately.”
Before ballots can be counted, election officials must process them by verifying signatures on the envelope against those on file and ensuring voters are listed for absentee or mail-in voting.
Hawaii is among ten states that allow election workers to start processing and counting ballots before Election Day.
Ferguson reiterated, “Even though we may not know the election winners when we go to bed, what matters most is making sure every eligible voter’s ballot is counted accurately.”
In the previous 2020 elections, Hawaii saw a voter turnout of 69.6%, with over five hundred thousand ballots cast. Similar numbers are expected if voter turnout remains consistent in this year’s midterm elections.
