The Hawaii Department of Transportation announced on Apr. 23 that lane closures on westbound Kamehameha Highway (Route 99) in ‘Aiea will continue through early May as slope repairs are extended. The project, which began April 13, was initially scheduled to finish by April 24 but is now expected to be completed by May 4.

This extension is due to the decision to lengthen the glass polymer reinforced wall along the entire 300 feet of the slope under the ‘Aiea Cemetery. The department said this move aims to reduce the risk of future slope failures and improve long-term safety for motorists using this stretch of highway.

During construction, both lanes of westbound Kamehameha Highway between the off-ramp to ‘Aiea Access Road and the H-201 on-ramp will remain closed. The left lane toward Pearl City will reopen for evening commutes from Monday through Friday between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., while both lanes will stay closed during weekends as contractors work around-the-clock. Motorists are advised to use alternate routes such as H-1 Freeway or detour via Moanalua Road, Salt Lake Boulevard, or Kahuapaani Street.

According to the official website, the Hawaii Department of Transportation manages a statewide highway system, multiple airports for domestic and international carriers, and commercial harbors across all six major Hawaiian islands. The department functions as part of Hawaii’s executive branch government according to its official website and operates more than 2,450 lane miles of highways along with several airports and harbors according to its official website.

The department states that it seeks “to deliver a safe, efficient, accessible and sustainable transportation system that supports mobility for people and goods while fostering economic growth and quality of life” according to its official website. It also collaborates with federal agencies such as the Federal Aviation Administration, U.S. Coast Guard, Federal Highway Administration, as well as county planning departments according to its official website.

All work is weather permitting. Updates about completion of repairs and reopening lanes will be provided by HDOT.
