Kaʻahumanu Hale, the Circuit Court of the First Circuit at 777 Punchbowl Street in Honolulu, was closed at 2 p.m. on May 5 because of a power outage.

Chief Justice Vladimir P. Devens has issued an order extending the deadline for filing documents due that day to Wednesday, May 6. All hearings and trials scheduled for the afternoon will be rescheduled, according to court officials. The Judiciary said it appreciates the public’s understanding and cooperation during this disruption.

The Hawaii State Judiciary manages courts statewide across multiple circuits serving islands such as Oʻahu, Maui, and Kauaʻi, according to the official website. The courts are organized by circuits to serve various Hawaiian islands including Oʻahu, Maui and Kauaʻi. Judges are appointed through a process involving the Judicial Selection Commission and gubernatorial selection for appellate and circuit courts; terms last ten years and require Senate confirmation.

The Judiciary emphasizes judicial diversity to enhance fair justice administration in the community. It aims to foster inclusivity in its courts so they mirror Hawaii’s diversity and ensure fair justice administration, according to the official website.
