Drivers in Honolulu are advised of an additional westbound closure on the H-1 Freeway to coincide with a planned continuous weekend eastbound closure. The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (HDOT) announced that two lanes on the westbound H-1 Freeway between the Palama overpass and Likelike On-Ramp will be closed from 10 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14 through 7 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 15. This closure supports waterline tie-in work as part of the ongoing Interstate Route H-1 Eastbound Improvements.
The full eastbound closure will take place between the Middle Street merge and the Likelike Highway off-ramp from 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13 to 4:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 16, as previously scheduled.
According to HDOT, “The decision was made to combine the two closures to maximize productivity during this continuous weekend closure, and reduce time and work needed to complete waterline relocations.”
During this period, two lanes in each direction will be closed for the necessary work on a new 36-inch waterline associated with the improvement project from Ola Lane Overpass to Likelike Highway off-ramp. HDOT noted that homes and businesses served by this waterline are currently using bypass lines and will not lose service during the tie-in process.
Special duty police officers will assist with traffic control and safety procedures throughout the closures. Electronic message boards will provide updates for motorists about closure information.
HDOT has also identified contingency weekends—Feb. 20-23, Feb. 27 – March 2, and March 6-9—in case of weather or construction delays.
The overall H-1 Eastbound Improvements Project aims to enhance safety and efficiency by removing a merge area and adding emergency shoulders along this section of interstate. The Gulick Avenue Overpass, which currently has O‘ahu’s lowest vertical clearance, will be rehabilitated through this project and raised by approximately six inches.
Project completion is expected by October 2027 if weather conditions permit. Additional information can be found at https://h1widening.com/. A comprehensive list of state roadway lane closures is available at https://hidot.hawaii.gov/highways/roadwork/.
